Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin to singing superstar Dionne. When she was a kid she performed in the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. At the age of she was fifteen, Houston was singing professionally backing vocals with her mother for Chaka Khan's 1978 song Im Every Woman. She started as a featured performer for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her vocal quality work earned her the attention of the major label Arista where she signed up in 1983. The year 1985 saw Whitney Houston's first album became the best-selling debut album of all time. A number of hit singles, such as The Greatest Love of All, Saving My Love For You How Do I know It's Good to Love You as well as The Most Beautiful Love of All were released from the album, setting her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US top 10s. The album debuted in 1987 and sold 25 million copies around the world. Its Whitney 1987 release, featuring the songs Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as popular songs, was a way to build on the success she had achieved. However, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard sealed her spot among the top-selling musicians in history.
